Psychedelics, Neuroplasticity, and Healing: What BDNF Means for Trauma Recovery

There's a reason psychedelics are starting to show up more in conversations about mental health, and it's not just because they're novel or experimental. It's because they may actually help shift patterns that have felt stuck for a long time.

I think about the clients who come in already understanding their patterns but unable to change them. They know where the trauma came from. They've talked about it. They've tried to think differently about it. And still, something in the system doesn't shift. This is where neuroplasticity, and the actual biology of how the brain changes, becomes important.


Why Patterns Feel So Hard to Change

One of the things we understand more clearly now in trauma work is that patterns don't persist because someone isn't trying hard enough. They persist because the brain has learned them deeply and efficiently. Over time, the brain builds strong pathways around fear, hypervigilance, self-protection, and relational safety, and those pathways become automatic. So what we're really asking when we talk about healing is whether the brain can become flexible enough to form new ones.


A Simple Way to Understand BDNF and Dendrites

Here's how I often explain it to clients. Think of a neuron like a tree. The dendrites are the branches, the axon is the trunk, and the axon terminals are like roots reaching outward to connect with other trees.

When you're chronically stressed, anxious, or depressed, those branches start to change. They shrink and lose complexity. It's like the tree is going bare, with fewer leaves and fewer points of connection. When that happens, your brain has a harder time communicating, and the transmission of things like serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine becomes less efficient. That's part of why everything can start to feel harder: thinking, focusing, regulating your mood, shifting out of a funk.


What BDNF Actually Does

BDNF, or brain-derived neurotrophic factor, is like fertilizer for that tree. It helps the dendrites grow, branch out, and become more receptive, which means your brain becomes more capable of forming new connections.

There are small, everyday ways to increase BDNF: exercise, especially the kind that gets your heart rate up, and certain foods like dark chocolate or berries. But psychedelic therapies, like ketamine-assisted therapy, appear to create a much more significant increase in BDNF. And that creates something important: a window where the brain is more open to change.




What Happens When the Brain Isn't Getting What It Needs

Another piece of this that clients often recognize right away is what happens internally when things feel off. When those dendrites are struggling and your system is under-supported, your brain doesn't go quiet. It does the opposite. The default mode network, which should be relatively calm when you're at rest, starts to get loud. It's like a radio stuck on volume ten in the background, and what's playing isn't neutral. It's reminders of everything you need to do, self-critical thoughts, rumination, looping fears.

When that radio is that loud, it becomes much harder to focus, concentrate, or feel present, because another system — the salience network — can't effectively decide what actually deserves your attention. Everything starts to feel important. Everything feels urgent.


Why This Affects Your Ability to Function

From there, it starts to impact your executive functioning: the part of your brain responsible for decision making, planning, organization, and follow-through. To make good decisions, your brain needs clarity about what to focus on, and when there's constant internal noise, that clarity is hard to access. So what many people experience isn't just "I'm anxious" or "I'm overwhelmed." It's closer to, "My brain won't quiet down enough for me to function the way I want to."


Where Psychedelics Come In

What psychedelics appear to do biologically is create a condition where BDNF increases, dendrites become more receptive, and new connections become possible. But here's the important part: they don't fix the brain, they increase its flexibility. They quiet certain rigid networks, like the default mode network, which gives people a different kind of access: to emotion, to perspective, to new patterns.


Why Therapy Still Matters

This is where a lot of people misunderstand psychedelic therapy. The medicine may open the window, but it doesn't determine what happens next. Without support, the brain tends to fall back into familiar pathways. That's why integration matters so much. Healing isn't just about creating new pathways, it's about reinforcing them, understanding them, and practicing them.

In trauma work, we also understand that these patterns aren't random. They're adaptations, often protective parts of the system that developed to help you survive. So when flexibility increases, the goal isn't simply to "rewire" something. It's to relate differently to those protective responses.


What This Means for Trauma Healing

For people with trauma, especially complex trauma, the experience is often, "I know I'm safe, but I don't feel safe." That's because trauma doesn't just live in the stories we tell, it lives in the body and the nervous system. By increasing neuroplasticity and BDNF, psychedelics may help soften those deeply ingrained patterns. But lasting change still depends on safety, relationship, and integration over time.
